Top Ten Neighbourly Tips
  • Ask your neighbours to keep an eye on your home if you are going away, and offer to do the same for them.
  • Leave a key with a trustworthy neighbour if you are going on holiday so they can come in and draw the curtains for you, collect your post and maybe turn the lights on and off. This will help to make your house look lived in and deter burglars.
  • If you have a burglar alarm, security lighting, CCTV etc. make sure that they are set properly, and that someone knows what to do if something goes wrong. There’s nothing worse than a burglar alarm that keeps going off, or security lighting that shines into a neighbour’s bedroom window at night.
  • Keep an eye out for elderly neighbours who are more at risk from bogus callers.
  • Make an effort to know your neighbours – starting a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme is a good way to do this.
  • Ask your neighbour to collect parcels or special deliveries if you are out at work or unable to be at home.
  • If you see someone acting suspiciously in your neighbourhood contact the police.
  • If you witness a crime or know any information that may help the police then call Crimestoppers confidentially on 0800 555 111.
  • Don’t leave information about your identity in your rubbish! Destroy old bills, bank statements, credit card bills/receipts, and anything with your signature or personal details on. Identity theft is on the increase and most of the information a criminal needs to apply for a fake passport or new credit card in your name can be found in rubbish bins.
